Tips for Teenagers on Using Bodybuilding Supplements
Bodybuilding is a healthy way for teenagers to get involved in sports. But it can become an obsession for teenagers who often go to extremes for their passions in life. Because it takes total dedication to the sport to be a success in bodybuilding, teenagers sometimes go overboard. Perhaps because bodybuilding supplements are marketed so successfully or because young bodybuilders learn about such supplements from older bodybuilders, it is easy for teenage athletes to think that diet supplements should take a central role in their path to success in the sport of bodybuilding. This enthusiasm should be tempered with wise counsel on how teenage bodybuilders can use diet supplements correctly.
This is not to say that the use of diet supplements is bad for teenagers because they are not. But as it true of everything a young person does, the use of supplements as part of the young person's devotion to bodybuilding must be done in moderation and in context of a well designed and implemented program of exercise and training.
Teenagers should be cautioned against believing advertising for bodybuilding supplements that seem to promise phenomenal results. Those results are possible through hard work, dedicated training, discipline and plenty of patience. Supplements are not a short cut that will allow a young athlete to get around the tough work it takes to succeed in the bodybuilding sport. The supplements that can be beneficial to a teenager would start with the daily use of a well designed multivitamin. This will help the young athlete avoid any nutritional shortfalls that a diet geared toward fat loss and muscle growth can cause.
In the case of teenagers who have trouble gaining weight, a well regarded protein powder can be integrated into the diet as well. Often teenagers have trouble adding weight because of their high metabolisms. The protein supplement that is perfect for a teenage bodybuilder should be low on sugar but one that releases the protein slowly so it can contribute to muscle growth. It is best if the selection and proper use of a protein supplement be done under guidance of the teenager's bodybuilding coach and then only after bodybuilding training has been ongoing for some time so he or she can get a good feel for the type of development that will work for each individual teenage athlete.
Above all, male teenage bodybuilders should avoid any supplements that use agents that boost the testosterone level of the body. Teenage males have a surplus of testosterone as it is. Adding additional levels will actually be detrimental to bodybuilding development instead of helping the young athlete reach his training goals.
Young people often show far more enthusiasm for bodybuilding supplements than is appropriate. The leadership of the youth's parents and trainers should supply the wise counsel needed to be sure that the youthful bodybuilder uses such supplements wisely. If that is accomplished, supplements can make a significant contribution to the continued success of any teenager's bodybuilding program.
